The Red White and Blue

I found this wall hanging pattern, titled Storm-at-Sea, designed by Marti Mitchell, in the April 1993 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine. I love the way it gives the illusion of curves, even though all the piecing is in straight lines. I had to fudge some of the piece dimensions to make it work. The pieces that look like diamonds are actually slightly offset parallelograms. I plan to enter this in the Red White and Blue Challenge for the Marathon Quilt Guild's show this April. The challenge is in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. I had a lot of white and blue fabric, but have never been a fan of red. I had to go to the store for this one, which is not so easy since so many brick and mortar fabric stores have closed. Lucky for me, the Fabric Place Basement in Framingham had just what I needed. The darkest blue fabric has very subtle shaded stars in lighter blue and metallic silver. The medium blue fabric has a sprinkling of tiny stars in various shades of blue. The dark red fabric has gold metallic stars. I quilted it with red, blue and gold metallic thread. The thin white stripe in the border is my first attempt at a flange. I'm not sure this doesn't need more quilting. I've hung it in the laundry room to live with it for a while.
